Corporate FAQ
Q: When was DRC founded and why?
A: DRC Computer was founded in July 2004. Our mission is to be the leading provider of dynamically reconfigurable co-processor systems that can deliver improved processing speeds at lower system costs and reduced power consumption on next-generation high performance computing systems.
The convergence of several factors made this a compelling opportunity. First, market demand for increased speed had outpaced standard microprocessor performance. As a result, new architectures are now being built with multiple compute resources, including various accelerators. Second, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) were large enough for the first time to provide significant compute power for a co-processor. Third, high speed interprocessor bus from AMD allowed direct peer-to-peer connection between an RPU (Reconfigurable Processor Unit) and the CPU. Fourth, the New PCIe technology roadmap enables high performance Compatible coprocessor performance between CPU and the RPU on the PCIe platform.
Q: Who are DRC's founders?
A: Larry Laurich and Steve Casselman founded DRC together. Larry, DRC’s president and CEO, had served as Vice President and General Manager of the System Division of Tandem Computer wheere he led revenue growth from $10 million to $1.6 billion. Larry was head of the technology group at the IBM Office Products Division in Boulder CO, Additionally, he was CEO of IP Mobile Net, Vision Solutions, and N Light Systems.
Recognized as “one of the fathers of reconfigurable computing,” Steve Casselman, DRC’s Chief Technology Officer, has been instrumental in shaping the reconfigurable computing industry. He holds 5 issued patents and received the first Small Business Innovation and Research Technology of the Year Award for his work with the Naval Surface Warfare Center.
Q: How many employees does DRC have?
A: Currently, DRC has 10 full time and 5 part time employees and contractors.
Q: Who are DRC’s competitors?
A: Our competitors fall into three categories: manufacturers of multi-core CPUs which deliver limited performance gains on their own; other accelerator manufacturers such as GPU providers which deliver performance gains but are very difficult to program and less flexible than RPU technology; and direct RPU manufacturers such as XtremeData.
Q: Does DRC have customers?
A: DRC’s current customers include Cray Inc., Unisys, Synective Labs, X-ISS, and Oakridge National Lab to name a few. Many of these DRC customers in turn service the end customers with hardware, software and services to provide complete solutions to the application requirements.
Q: Who are DRC’s partners?
A: DRC’s partners include companies like AMD, Xilinx, Altera, Impulse Accelerated Technologies, DSPlogic, SuperMicro systems, and Colfax International. DRC offers partner programs for researchers, developers, and resellers.
Q: Will DRC partner with other CPU and FPGA vendors?
A: DRC will consider significant new technologies and architectures when they become available on the market. We currently support Xilinx and Altera based products.
Q: Is the company currently shipping product?
A: DRC has been shipping its flagship Reconfigurable Processing Unit (RPU) since its first commercial release in October 2006.It has developed four generations of RPU’s with the latest being developed on the PCIe platform.
Q: What are the company’s revenues? Is DRC profitable?
A: As a private company, we do not disclose our revenue.
Q: Why will DRC be successful today and in the long term?
A: DRC’s solution addresses an insatiable market need for faster, less expensive, and more efficient high performance computing. Until now, other solutions could deliver performance gains, but at an incrementally higher cost. DRC can deliver a more economical solution with 3x-10x the performance per dollar achievable with CPUs. In addition, DRC boasts a senior management team with years of industry experience and technical expertise.
